When heading into the outdoors, you chose multi-purpose gear whenever possible -- bonus points for equipment that's both functional and fun. You can't do better than The Don't Die Out There Deck, a compact deck of playing cards that tucks easily into any backpack or pocket. From construction of emergency shelters and evacuation techniques to how to care for someone with a fracture or construct a solar still, your poker hand contains basic survival tips that could prove lifesaving! The Don't Die Out There Deck makes a great gift for anyone who spends time in the outdoors.
Topics are organized by card suit -- Diamonds: survival essentials, signals, locating your position, and shelters; Spades: assessing the situation, water, fire, food, and evacuation techniques; Hearts: basic first aid, hypothermia, frostbite, heat illness, and sprains and dislocations; Clubs: CPR, head and spine injuries, fractures, bites and stings, and evacuating the injured.
"We shuffled the deck and saw that the content is serious stuff - information and how-to procedures that hikers and campers shouldn't be without."-- "The Sacramento Bee"
When our mountain rescue text come in, the call may take us racing up a mountain peak to rescue an injured hiker, scaling a rocky ledge for a hiker who has fallen over a cliff, into a blizzard to search for missing skiers, or to a mountain airplane crash. Our team, Hood River Crag Rats, is oldest mountain rescue group in the nation. This is celebrated in my new book, Crisis on Mount Hood: Stories from 100 Years of Mountain Rescue, by the Mountaineers Books.
I also have a day job: I work as a author, consultant and physician in wilderness and travel medicine. In addition to clinic work, I've written for National Geographic Adventure, Outside, and other publications.
